The Great Solar Eclipse of 2017
A once in a lifetime astronomical event will occur on August 21, 2017, and I will be there! I don't yet know if I'll be going in my capacity as an educator or if I'll be using a personal day and going as a mom, but either way I'll be there as a lover of science! A total solar eclipse will pass over Missouri mid-day on our first Monday of the 2017-2018 school year. The totality path will, unfortunately, not pass over Webb City, but a short 3 hour drive will get me to the path. Webb City will be able to see about a 90% eclipse, but I want to see the full eclipse! People from all over the world will be flocking to the continental US to witness this incredible event. Missouri has not been the site of a total solar eclipse since the 1400s, and the continental US has not experience this since the 1700s. We've had partial eclipses, but not a total. I just don't anticipate being within reach of such a rare scientific occurrence and settling for 90%. I'm going to start planning some home science lessons for my Sophia now so that she is knowledgeable of the rarity of this event and truly appreciates it when we witness it. Maybe if we're lucky, we might have 4,000 of our closest friends there with us.
